The popular card game baccarat is played in online and physical casinos worldwide. However, you may be unaware that there are three variants of the game, each with small but notable rule and format changes.

The most popular variant is North American baccarat, or punto banco, which is “normal” baccarat to most people. You can also play baccarat chemin de fer or baccarat banque depending on the availability of card rooms.

The main difference between these formats is that in regular baccarat, the cards dealt during the game dictate each player’s moves. That is not the case for the other two variants, where players can make choices about how to proceed.

The general objective for all three variants is the same. Players attempt to beat the banker’s card value by assembling a hand with a value of nine or as close to that figure as possible. There are three possible outcomes. The player wins, the banker wins, or there is a tie.

Chemin de fer

After logging on to the Best NJ Online Casinos and selecting baccarat from one of the many card games available, you may get the chance to play Chemin de fer. This is a version of the game that originated in France in the 19th century and remains popular today.

In this variant, players compete against each other rather than the dealer, though the card values are the same. At the start of the game, one of the eight to twelve players becomes the banker, who then makes a wager at the beginning of each round.

In a counterclockwise direction, the other players then get the chance to decide whether they will match the wager, but only one player can “go bank.” An impasse here with every player abstaining leads to another round where players can make individual wagers.

The player with the highest wager then plays against the banker who deals two cards face down to themselves and the player. The game then proceeds as normal.

Baccarat Banque

Baccarat Banque differentiates itself through the banker’s position, which is permanent and put up to auction to the player who opts to undertake the largest risk. There are also three shuffled decks used instead of the six or eight used for normal baccarat.

In this variant, players can make a wager at the start of each round, but crucially they remain if a player even if someone decides to “go bank.” These wagers can also exceed the banker’s bet.

Baccarat Banque requires the players to sit to the banker’s left and right in two “teams.” The game starts with the banker dealing three cards face down to themselves and the first player on each side.

Baccarat Banque and normal baccarat share similarities in that the casino always holds the bank as opposed to chemin de fer, where players can bet against each other. That is one of the main differences. There are also differences in how the game proceeds in all three variants, but card values and the “comparing” style are constant.
